Handsworth Cricket
Club (HCC) was formed from two Handsworth park teams, Rangers CC and
Continental CC. Initially calling themselves “Continental Rangers CC”,
they soon joined together to play club cricket in Handsworth Park.
The amalgamation enabled the playing of Warwickshire league cricket for
the first time in that Park in 1999. In 2001 the name was changed to
Handsworth CC. Placed then in Division 5 of the Warwickshire Cricket
League, HCC shows its metal by rapidly advancing to the Premier League in
2008.
HCC runs three
leagues sides on Saturdays, a women Midland
league team on some Sundays, and up to five youth teams. HCC was a member
of the annual Victoria Mutual Cup, a national knockout cricket
competition played between Caribbean-led cricket teams or clubs.
HCC’s home ground,
owned by Birmingham City Council though jointly maintained, is located in
Handsworth Park,
Birmingham.
HCC is necessarily a community-orientated club with its general committee
accountable to its total membership. It actively seeks to extend its
playing and social membership, making use of its small but adequate
clubhouse with its licensed bar. Efforts are being made to facilitate
better management arrangements in using, improving and maintaining the facilities.
Handsworth Park
cricket’s potential is relevant to the local community. So if you are
local to Birmingham, capable and/or
interested in the traditional Caribbean
style cricket and atmosphere, why not click “Membership Form” (opposite)
and apply to join – or just visit the ground particularly on Saturdays
during the summer?
“Forward ever, Backward
never”!
